Happy Mother’s Day

by Mark Reichenbach | May 10th, 2009

The day started around 4:30 am with our 11 month old Emily, fussy and flopping, using the crying-card to gain entrance into the marital bed. Our almost 4 year old Elizabeth then snuck in around 5:30. Without my glasses, all times are approximate. At 6:30 the realization that sleep for the night was over, has sunk in.

I roll over and back a couple of times but I know the truth.

I can’t handle the truth.

The day has begun.

But this is Sunday May 10th. This is about “The Mommy”, my wife Lisa. (And my weak attempt at a literary shout-out to all the wonderful Mothers out there)  And so while I’m rolling this way and that way in my denial that no more sleep will be had, what’s my wife doing? Well, she’s doing the hard part. She’s actually dealing with the fussy, Missy Foo.

What's my wife doing? Well, she's doing the hard part. She's dealing with the fussy, Missy Foo.

Divide and conquer they say, I try to help.  “Elizabeth, come over here” as I walk to other side of the bedroom. I whisper “shsssshhh…here bring this to Mommy” and I pull out the Mother’s Day gift.

So off scampers my daughter running over to my wife (who is holding “the Foo” ) and my daughter says “here Mommy, this is from the family”  My wife is the best and as the Mom, let’s not forget she literally gave us “the family” with two sunny side up deliveries of two very special little girls.

As my friends all say, even my mother-in-law says “Oh Marco, you’re done!”

It’s pretty funny, I know what they’re talking about and in so many ways, it’s just the opposite, I’m not done, I’m just getting started.  So here’s a quick thank you to all the wonderful Mothers out there.  First, my wife Lisa – XOXOX.  Next is my Mom Joann Shannon Reichenbach Tefft.  Then we have my Mother-in-Law Betty, who’s become my NY Mom and friend, she raised three kids by herself and kept her sanity and sense of humor throughout. Then we have my sister Laura, who has raised two while dealing with everything you could throw at her and handling it with class, grace wit and humor. And to my other sister Mary, who has raised three girls and now a grandson.

It’s very hard to give proper treatment to these wonderful Mom’s in two paragraphs or less, so I must concede, it’s an impossible task.   All I can do is to encourage all of you to honor your Mom today, keep that loving thought and remind you who put up with all your sorry, annoying BS as you were turning into the person who is reading this blog entry.
Push away from the keyboard, call her, think of her, send flowers and love her. Just do something.
p.s. – Here’s some Hall-of-Fame Moms who deserve quick props:
Anne Cunningham, Helen V., Opal Captan, Louisa Liscandrello, Donna Cortese, Denise LaRosa, Jen, Mary Pat Poteet, Joan Kaiser, Carolyn Bellacerra, Sabina, Linda Fosler, Toni Ann, Toni Marie, Amanda, Carmen O-F., Dawn Nicotra, Sheri Stevens, Melena Keeling, Gita, Roseanne, Carol Grant and Roxanne Lin. –   The list could go on and on and my sincere regrets to all those I forgot this morning but I have to get back downstairs to help the resident Hall of Famer, Lisa Joy.
